Understanding child participation
/Guide with practical tools to strengthen children’s participation through rights-based activities.
This guide, published in 2014 by UNICEF Spain’s Child Friendly Cities Programme and developed by Los Glayus Association, provides a conceptual and practical framework to promote child and adolescent participation. It explains participation as “being part, having a part, and taking part” and identifies key competencies: analyzing reality, planning, carrying out actions, evaluating results, knowing and claiming rights, and building community identity. It includes over 30 tested activities and exercises designed to train critical thinking, active listening, creativity, empathy, conflict resolution, communication, and planning skills. As a pedagogical toolbox, the resource fosters experiential learning, a sense of belonging, and children’s agency in their communities.
