Student participation: Good practice guide for schools
/A practical guide to strengthen authentic student voice and participation in school decision-making.
This practical handbook, developed by the Commissioner for Children and Young People Western Australia, provides school staff and administrators with clear guidance on how to embed authentic student participation in decision-making across all aspects of school life. Drawing on the Lundy model (space, voice, audience, influence), the guide outlines principles, benefits, and approaches for engaging students meaningfully — beyond tokenistic practices. It highlights the positive impact on learning, wellbeing, and school culture, and presents real examples from Australian schools. The document also provides a self-assessment tool and reflection questions to support schools in evaluating and improving their participatory practices. It emphasizes inclusion, equity, and children’s rights as core components of a student-centered learning environment.
