Participatory design toolkit for affordable housing
/Toolkit for co-designing affordable housing through inclusive community engagement and facilitation.
Developed by the Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellowship, this resource is intended for architects, urban designers, facilitators, and housing organizations who aim to co-create with residents, staff, and local stakeholders. It outlines a community-driven design process that centers input at every project stage — from early planning to post-occupancy. The toolkit includes workshop formats, facilitation tips, design analysis activities, and tools to identify spatial needs, barriers, and aspirations. Activities like “Always/Sometimes/Never,” “Cut and Paste Design,” and “My Favorite Places” allow participants to articulate how spaces are used, what they value, and what must change. By fostering inclusive engagement, the toolkit strengthens project outcomes, promotes equity, and ensures the final design reflects the lived experiences of its users.
