Important information on traveling to Nairobi
Visas
If you are traveling from abroad to the convening, please check the official Kenya E-Visa website for information on how to apply and what is required. We will issue invitation letters to all confirmed participants.
If you encounter any issues with your flights before or while traveling, please first contact the airline company to see if the issue can be directly resolved with the them.
Fellow fever vaccination
If you are coming from a country that requires you to get vaccinated for yellow fever, please do so as soon as possible. See the full list of countries requiring vaccination.
Note that you need to get vaccinated at least 10 days before your date of arrival to receive a certificate of immunity. Without it, you will not be let into the country. You only need to be vaccinated for yellow fever once in your life.
Welcome pack
All our attendees will receive a welcome pack via email two weeks before the convening! If you haven’t received it, reach out to us at info@peoplepowered.org. It contains a link to join a WhatsApp group for quick updates among other crucial things.
Other useful information
Connectivity
Please note that airport Wi-Fi can be unreliable. To stay connected upon arrival, we recommend purchasing an eSIM before you travel or buy local SIMs at the airport. For eSIMs, providers such as Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Ubigi, or GigSky offer reliable data packages that can be activated instantly, allowing you to access the internet as soon as you land.
Emergency contacts
If you need to call the emergency services:
Ambulance / medical emergency: 112 or 999
Police: 112 or 999
Currency
Kenya’s currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES)
Approximate rate: 1 USD ≈ 193 KES (please check the current rate)
Make sure to withdraw or exchange some cash into local currency as some businesses may have a minimum for credit cards. You may need to check with your bank if you need to allow overseas transactions.
Weather and other details
The weather in Nairobi in March is warm and generally pleasant, with daytime temperatures around 20–27°C and cooler evenings. March marks the start of the long rainy season, so occasional showers are likely. A light rain jacket or umbrella is recommended.
Kenya operates on 240V and 50Hz, with plug type G (UK-style). Please remember to bring a power adaptor if your electronics use a different plug type.
What to wear
Workshop sessions are business casual. For site visits, we recommend comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes. Evenings can be cooler, and rain is possible.
