Community-led public transport procurement

This blog post presents a case study from rural Scotland, in which community members were given decision-making power over a public procurement process.

In 2014, the author helped pioneer community engagement in public transit procurement in rural Scotland, inspired by participatory approaches in cities like Porto Alegre, Brazil and Barcelona, Spain. By incorporating participatory decision-making in the process, the community saved 10% and saw an initial increase in transit usage of 15%, and had real power in co-designing £2.4 million in public services.
