We’re expanding the Climate Democracy Accelerator

We’re expanding the Climate Democracy Accelerator! Since 2022, we have supported over 90 participatory programs to develop community-led climate solutions, in more than 33 countries. Thanks to a new grant, People Powered and its members and partners will double the size of the accelerator and deepen its local impact.

The Climate Democracy Accelerator (CDA) is a comprehensive capacity-building and advocacy project that supports government, civil society, and community leaders to launch participatory climate programs, including climate assemblies, green participatory budgeting and planning, and participatory climate policymaking.

During the six-month accelerator, participants receive capacity-building support to design and implement these participatory programs, including training, networking, mentorship, grants, and advocacy support.

This support enables local communities to shape and implement climate policy and public spending decisions that address renewable energy, regenerative agriculture, and related issues, including environmental restoration, climate resilience, and food security. To learn what these impacts look like on the grant, watch our profile videos of local programs in India and Zimbabwe.

Over the next three years, thanks to support from the Waverley Street Foundation, we will help plan and launch 120 more community-led climate action plans and programs around the world. These regional and local programs will enable more ambitious climate mitigation and adaptation practices, local government accountability, equitable policy implementation, and resources for climate democracy.

After already partnering with the World Resources Institute and the Open Government Partnership, the CDA will also now work closely with lead national organizations in Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and South Africa. These strategic partnerships help to build long-term buy-in from local governments and to amplify policy impacts.
