Climate Democracy In Action: Global Case Studies

Do you wonder how communities around the world are using participatory democracy to drive climate action?

From citizens' climate assemblies shaping policy in Nigeria, to forest governance in the Indian Himalayas, to community-led solutions in the Brazilian Amazon — practitioners are proving that when people have a say, climate outcomes improve.

Join us on Tuesday, June 2, 9–10:30 am ET | 1–2:30 pm UTC | 6:30–8 pm IST for a webinar featuring practitioners and partners from the Climate Democracy Accelerator (CDA) who have designed and led participatory climate programs. You'll hear what worked, what they learned, and how participatory approaches are delivering real climate outcomes.

Meet the speakers

  • David Wuyep, Executive Director, Fundlink Aid International (Nigeria) — pioneered Nigeria's first Citizens' Climate Assembly in Plateau State, which has led to a draft climate policy, a new government office for citizen participation, and plans to replicate across 17 local government areas.

  • Elizabeth Mwaura, Program Coordinator, Pipal Tree (India) — led a climate program in Karnataka that brought together two divided Adivasi communities through watershed restoration, with women's leadership at its center.

  • Marcella Nery, Program Director, Delibera Brasil — She coordinated the Bujaru Climate Citizens' Assembly — Brazil's contribution to a landmark series of Latin American assemblies addressing the climate crisis. and is now building a network of participatory actors across Brazil.

  • Mercedes Nasiff, Program Officer, Open Government Partnership — sharing how open government principles are helping local governments overcome barriers to climate action.

Moderated by People Powered’s Melissa Zisengwe, Program Manager, and featuring Valery Molay, Climate Democracy Coordinator, expect conversation after each presentation, audience Q&A, and breakout rooms by region (Latin America, Africa, and Asia), where you can connect directly with speakers and partners.

In conjunction, applications are open for the next CDA cohort (up to $25,000 in funding) and Rising Stars Mentorship up till June 26. Webinar attendees will also get advice on how to put together a strong application.

This webinar is for anyone looking to learn about the latest climate democracy innovations or to get support running such programs like these — whether you're a policymaker, civil society leader, or community organizer.
